Animation Terms
Overlaid Graphics - Culture card, Delta 9 – This is video/photo heavy content that has some added graphics over top – often to illustrate key points/messages. They can be pretty straight forward like Culture Card or Yes! Winnipeg, or they can be more integrated, like Delta 9.
Basic/Standard Animation – Mostly moving text and shapes and designs. Little to no character animation. DF, MTA
Advanced Animation – Xtract AI, Xplornet, iQmetrix – Using more flourishes, intricate designs, and plays in 3D space more.
Standard Character Animation – Pernod, - relatively simple design and characters have basic movements (heads and arms moving).
Medium Character Advanced: Co-op – Characters have some more detail and have full (but limited) function, like a puppet would have. There would be little change in facial expressions.
Advanced Character – Tripwire, Nuton, Gimli – Characters have full fluid movement, often complimented with detailed backgrounds/sets to maximize style and engagement.
2.5D – Hydro - Incorporates elements of 3D to make a really dynamic look. This is a great option when full 3D is not in budget (which it often is)
Illustrated Animation – G3 – We will utilize a graphic artist to create all of the scenes for a fully custom look and design. This is great when an animation really needs to standout.
3D – Pulse Canada, iQmetrix, New Flyer – A very advanced style of animation that allows for some incredibly engaging design. It’s as beautiful as it can also be cost prohibitive (render times and feedback alone can really eat up a budget), so there needs to often be substantial budget and organized project/client management (which is great when there is).
Toon Boom – N/A – As of now we don’t work in Toon Boom. This software mainly exists in the realm of animated TV shows, allowing for what used to be cell animation to be fully digital. It’s still worth understanding.
Cell/Frame-by-frame Animation – N/A – There is still a lot of amazing animation that is bascially drawn (digitally or by hand) frame by frame. Of course we would love to do these, but don’t have the internal resources or budget (yet). Here’s one of my faves
Parallax – Often when we are limited to photos, or we want to up the production value of the photos we are given, we can do parallax (or camera mapping, which is the 3D solution)
Mixed – Centreventure – There is a lot of ways that this can be done, but we are often marrying videos, photos, and design together to make a fully custom branded piece.
